Fight Your Fears

Back Cover

We all have fears, and many of us struggle with very real anxiety caused by our fears.  Fears about the future; fears about health, job, and family; fears about inadequacy and failure; fears about how much fear itself seems to affect our decisions, plans, and growth in this life.  In his Word God commands us not to be afraid, but how is this possible?

Kristen Wetherell is in the fight with you, day-by-day making strides in this battle.  In Fight Your Fears she carefully explores and unpacks ten of God's great and previous promises, equipping you with truth and practical tools to help you overcome the fears and anxious thoughts that rob you of your joy.

Review

Chock full of spiritual truths, Fight Your Fears is a timely book.  As the world is still in the throes of a pandemic, fear and anxiety have become very real fights for many people regardless of age, gender, geographic location, or economic position.  In Fight Your Fears, Kristen unpacks undeniable truths about God's unchanging character and the promises He has made to His children.  Whether you fear not being in control, not meeting all your (or your family's) needs, evil, loneliness, failure, man, or even death - this book not only encourages you, but challenges you to look to Christ, who is the author and finisher of our faith, the source of the great hope we have in this world.

I know I will be rereading this book many times as each chapter is just jam-packed with wisdom, scripture, and food for the heart, soul, and mind.  A fantastic read that I thoroughly enjoyed!

Review

What a beautiful, inspiring book!  Ruth Chou Simons pours her heart out onto the pages of Beholding and Becoming, urging fellow believers to consistently set our eyes upon the One who is worthy of all praise and glory.  And by having a heart full of worship in all that we do in every circumstance, we can abide in Christ and have a deeper relationship with our Savior.

I devoured these pages in two sittings and each word left an impact on my heart and soul.  From appreciating His creation to eagerly awaiting until we are called to our true, heavenly home, a wide variety of opportunities for worship are covered, encompassing our greatest joys to the small, ordinary things that we do by rote every day.  I was equally challenged and encouraged in reading through this text, where the author's words are supplemented by awe-inspiring hymns of faith and thought-provoking Scripture words of truth.  Not to mention, the delightful and beautiful artwork on each and every page was a feast for the eyes.

This is a fantastic book, and one that I would highly recommend.  It is so timely in this day in age when the culture is all about "me, myself, and I" - something that has strongly affected believers as well.  It would be great for a women's book study or even singular study.  I know I'll be reading this one again and again...

Wreck My Life

http://bakerpublishinggroup.com/books/wreck-my-life/379300

Back Cover

What if we began to recognize trouble and adversity as scared rather than scarring?

Jesus promises peace and trouble for His followers.  But most of us accept the peace and are confused and angry when adversity comes our way, turning our backs to God in the midst of our pain.

All-American soccer star Mo Isom knows the struggle firsthand.  While her life seemed like a success on the surface, behind closed doors she was suffering through an eating disorder, the suicide of her father, and a horrific car accident.  It wasn’t until God wrecked her life that she finally found like and discovered the true glory of renewal through Jesus Christ.

Take the journey from broken to bold and learn to surrender your life to the King who was first wrecked on your behalf.

Review

In a raw and unflinching manner, Mo Isom tells us a story of loss and triumph, of heartache and restoration, and ultimately, of God’s sustaining and never-ending love, powerful enough to change lives and heal brokenness.

Mo gives us a look inside tumultuous times in her life and holds nothing back.  From her Dad’s suicide, her eating disorder, and how those circumstances brought incredible amount of pain into her life, to her journey to rest her hope and life solely in Christ, Mo’s story will impress itself on every reader’s heart.

Personally, it encouraged me in my own walk with Christ and challenged me to live more boldly – striving to always be a witness for Him who I call my Lord.  Mo has chosen to use the difficult and painful circumstances in her life as a platform for telling of the heavenly Father’s love for us, and Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. As she states in her book, the decision wasn’t an easy one, for it required complete and full surrender of her life to God.  As she says on Page 46, “…for some reason, we seem to be people who would rather place our hope in manmade autonomy than surrender our lives to a God-designed identify when that identity requires faith to believe.”  But, “…Christ didn’t just die for my (our) sins, He died because of my (our) sins.” (Page 115 – parenthesis added)  Once that is fully recognized, then “…I should actually set my gaze back on God instead of focusing so much on the details of the journey I wanted Him to be orchestrating…I think that oftentimes we would argue that we are open to God authoring our stories when, in actuality, we are trying in our own strength to conveniently squeeze God into the story we’ve prewritten ourselves” (Page 157).  I’m definitely guilty of looking at my life and doing my own thing, when I really should be saying “Lord, lead me to where YOU want me to be”.

In closing, thank you, Mo, for sharing your story, for encouraging fellow believers, and being a witness to the world.

Beloved Mess

http://bakerpublishinggroup.com/books/beloved-mess/375040

Back Cover
God doesn't expect you to have it all together.

Life is messy.  Yet the pressure to appear to others as though you've got it all together is a powerful force.  We strive to act normally, look good, and set a positive example.  AFter all, as others may tell us, we're the only Jesus some people see - so we better make him look good.  That's a heavy burden.

But the Christian life is not about being less of a mess.  It's about admitting that we need to be saved from trying to clean ourselves up.  In Beloved Mess, Kimm Crandall frees you to live with the assurance that God loves you right here, right now.  He's not waiting for you to clean up your act before you're worthy to come to him. In fact, he wants you to stop trying to fix the mess and allow him to wash it away.

Review

Kimm's book would speak to any soul.  We live in a performance driven culture in the workforce and even in our personal life with family and friends whereby our worth is correlated to our daily actions and accomplishments.  It's only natural that the same attitude transfers over to our faith.  This book is an excellant reminder that "while we were yet sinners, Christ (loved and) died for us".  His love isn't conditional on what we say or do - if it was, we would be hopelessly lost and salvation would not be a finished work on the cross.  Rather, God loves us despite all that we do, the messes we create, and our ever present shortcomings.  Does this mean we never strive to do better?  Absolutely not.  As the Apostle Paul said, "should I sin so that grace may abound"?  But we need to let the love of God saturate our being, rest in His grace and mercy, otherwise we can easily fall into a cycle of works and despair, not doing things out of love for our Lord and His people, but "must do this or else!"

Beloved Mess is a very real book that is evidently written from the heart.  Kimm struggled (and still does) with the notion that God loves her right where she is - messes and all - and this book illuminates that struggle and desire to live with the assurance that no matter the failing, Christ's work on the cross is complete, and He loves her still.

I bent many page corners in this book to easily reference various points that really hit home for me, and wish to end on this quote from pages 121-122:

"Christ's love for you is not fickle.  It's not manipulative or abusive.
God is not passive-aggressive or codependent.
He has no requirements except that you need him.  He loves to love you.
He is loving and pursuing you at this very moment, whether you want him to or not.
It is a constant fight to mute the background noise of the world and of our past or present mess and listen to the Holy Spirit's voice of truth saying, 'You are my beloved mess.'"

Taming the To-Do List

http://bakerpublishinggroup.com/books/taming-the-to-do-list/375410

Back Cover

Ever just wish the world would stop for a day so you could catch up?

No matter how much we accomplish in a day, we nearly always feel a little guilt over what we didn’t do.  But do we really have more to do than the women who came before us?  Maybe not.

In Taming the To-Do List, Glynnis Whitwer exposes a seismic shift in society:  from one in which most of us were proactive to one in which we carry the burden of having to respond – to every email, text, tweet, and message we receive.  This creates a cycle where everyone else sets the priorities for our days rather than us directing our own lives.  The result?  We procrastinate, putting off the important stuff for later while we tend to the “urgent” stuff right now.

It’s time to take back your schedule!  Ready to tame that to-do list?  This book shows you how.

Review

Even though my job is fast-paced and ruled by strict deadlines whereby procrastination is an unfathomable thought, I’ve found that in my personal life, I can sometimes too easily “put off to tomorrow, what could be done today”.  And it’s always a variety of supposed reasons – (it’s amazing how many different excuses one can think up of when they are trying to get out of something!).  But really what is the root cause for all those excuses?

In Taming the To-Do List, Glynnis points out that procrastination can sometimes arise from is a fear of the outcome which perhaps results in failure - i.e. putting off starting a task or project for fear that it won’t be completed in the way we would have liked (which really is perfectionism), or failing to complete the task or project at all.  Of course, upon digging even deeper into that, one can see a root of pride.  We only accomplish things we can do and do well so that our image is protected.  But to take on a new project where one feels the odds of completing it in a worthy manner are not in your favour, and risk everyone seeing that and thinking badly of you?  Perish the thought!

That begs the question: if we never challenge ourselves, how can we ever grow?  And it isn’t just growing in our natural abilities – what about our faith and walk with Christ?  If fear of failure is keeping us from accomplishing a personal goal, could it also be preventing us from following God’s plan for our life – thereby being disobedient to His call?  Yes, that’s a troubling statement, isn’t it!  Further it reveals a trust that is placed in our own abilities, and not in the power of Christ.

Of course, there are other reasons for procrastinating, and one of them I believe is “biting off more than one can chew”, as in, saying “yes” to one to many things when we really don’t have the time for it all!  Further, as Glynnis points out, some procrastination is a good thing.  On page 189 she states “all procrastination is delay, but not all delay is procrastination”.  For as it says in Ecclesiastes, “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven”.  What I learned is that it’s just learning to recognize when procrastination in a certain situation isn’t a good thing, or is becoming a bad habit, and having the willingness to learn to change.

Glynnis doesn’t leave the reader at a standstill upon listing various reasons for procrastination.  She goes into detail about what can be done to help us overcome procrastination.  Some of her very helpful tips include creating a step-by-step plan for a “big project” so it doesn’t seem so daunting to start; implementing realistic timelines for completion of tasks; planning and adhering to simple routines; identify timewasters; have specific goals; enlisting the help of friends and/or family; having an accountability partner, etc.

Taming the To-Do List is a very practical book, but spoken from the heart of someone who cares.  Glynnis’ kind character shines throughout her writing and it felt more like sitting down over coffee with a girlfriend than actually reading an instructive book.  I highly recommend it, and will definitely be striving to apply her helpful advice to my life.

The Chase

http://bakerpublishinggroup.com/books/the-chase/355050

Back Cover

Only God could have written a love story as beautiful as Kyle and Kelsey Kupecky’s.  From their teenage days thousands of miles apart when they separately wrote letters to their future spouses, to a chance meeting backstage at a concert, their story brings inspiration and hope to every girl.

It’s easy to get impatient for the future to play out, especially when it comes to love.  Before long you find yourself chasing the perfect guy and trying to write your own happily ever after.  But the truth is, your best future won’t be found chasing boys—it’ll only come by first chasing God.

In The Chase, Kyle and Kelsey take turns telling their story—with Kelsey sharing secrets to a godly relationship and Kyle revealing the truth about what guys really think.  Together they’ll show you how to put God first, protect your heart, deal with the loneliness and peer pressure that comes along with purity, and see yourself as God does.

Are you ready to trust God with your very own happily ever after?  Let the chase begin!

Review

It is so true that one’s relationship with God must be the first priority in your life.  When we can say that we truly trust God with our lives and seek His wisdom with decisions, then we do not have to stress about the outcome of our life – or if we will ever find our future spouse.  “He’s got the whole world in His hands” – what a beautiful truth!  Of course, it does not mean everyone will get married - some, like the Apostle Paul, are called to be single.  But when we are living our lives sold-out for God, He will satisfy our deepest hopes and desires, and at times, in ways we could never, ever imagine, but always for the better.

Each chapter in The Chase touched on some very key issues in relationships – from not compromising your values, to allowing the guy to initiate the relationship, what a girl wants (to be loved and cared for!) and what a guy wants (respect!), and staying pure.  It also ends on a very hopeful note – just because you aren’t married yet, doesn’t mean you never will be.  It could very well be that you haven’t met “the one” yet (and it well worth the wait!).

Well-thought out and equally well-written, The Chase would be a great book for every single girl to read.  As a single gal myself, I felt very encouraged reading Kyle and Kelsey’s story – and know I will take the constructive advice to heart.

Review

I really, really enjoyed this book.

The Beauty of Grace is a compilation of various stories from different authors whose purpose is to cause us to pause, breathe deep, and remember the love and grace of God.   In today’s world, with hectic schedules, endless to-do lists, and no shortage of worries, it is easy to feel overwhelmed, drowning in a sea of busyness and losing sight of the Lord.  Some of the stories in The Beauty of Grace include daily struggles, and the writers share how they found calm in the midst of the storm, and hope in the chaos.  Other times they are of personal “aha!” moments or times of reflection.

Split into seven themes, “Purpose”, “The Big Picture”, “Surrender”, “Trust”, “Lessons Learned”, “Hope and Encouragement”, and “Worship”, the various memoirs highlight Biblical principles, with the constant reminder to keep our eyes fixed upon the Saviour, who will guide us through life – from the daily “mundane” to the bumps in the road.

Beautifully written and very encouraging, this book will make the great addition to anyone’s reading list.
