When Love Calls

Back Cover

Hannah Gregory is good at many things, but that list does not include following rules.  So when she must apply for a job as a switchboard operator to support her two sisters, she knows it won’t be easy.  Hello Girls must conduct themselves according to strict—and often bewildering—rules, which include absolutely no consorting with gentlemen while in training.

Hannah doubts it will be difficult to keep that rule—until a handsome young lawyer starts getting under her skin.

With historic details that bring to life the exciting first decade of the twentieth century, Lorna Seilstad weaves a charming tale of companionship that blossoms into sweet romance.

Review

When Love Calls follows stubborn, fiercely independent Hannah Gregory as she tries to look after her sisters after the death of their parents.  She hates feeling “lacking” and has a hard time accepting help.  But when Lincoln comes along, she starts to discover that she doesn’t need to be self-sufficient, and that it’s okay lean on someone.

I loved seeing the growth in Hannah's character as it made for an even richer story.  The romance between her and Lincoln was very sweet, and the relationships between Hannah and her sisters were wonderful to read.  When Love Calls is as much of story about the romance between Hannah and Lincoln as it is about the caring relationship between Hannah and her sisters.  It showed how they can pull together during tragedies and hard times and that nothing can break the bond between siblings.

On a lighter note, I just have to add that Ms. Seilstad writes such fun stories.  This is the second novel I have read by Ms. Seilstad, and it was just as good, if not better than the first.  Ms. Seilstad has a talent for writing witty characters and amusing banter and I just couldn’t stop myself from grinning as I read chapter after chapter!  When Love Calls is the perfect book for an easy and fun summer read.

It’s a summer of change for Jennifer O’Malley…

The busy physician has a pediatrics practice in Dallas, Texas, and meeting and falling in love with surgeon Tom Peterson is adding a rich layer to her life.  She’s sorting out how to introduce Tom to her family—she’s the youngest of seven—and thinking about marriage.

Review

For those familiar with Dee’s best-selling “O’Malley Series”, they will remember Jennifer as the most beloved of the seven orphans who “adopted” each other as siblings.  She is the sweetest of the siblings, known for being soft-spoken and having a warm, tender heart.  She is also the last of the O’Malleys to have a novel done, for her story is threaded throughout the other novels.  This book, more of a novella, precludes the O’Malley series, and I’m super happy that Dee wrote it.

Dee is a wonderful story-teller, and I loved seeing a more in-depth side of Jennifer’s character and the sweet, easy romance that blossomed between her and Tom.  It is a beautifully well-done story that will endear Jennifer to readers’ hearts even more.  If you’ve never read an O’Malley story, this would be a good place to start.
